The Brief (01)
Alternating diversional squint is acondition in which a patient’s eyes fail toalign properly, resulting in double vision. To help strengthen these eye muscles, orthoptists often recommend eyeexercises where the patient is required towear an eyepatch and use only one eyefor extended periods of time.

However, parents of children aged 4-6diagnosed with alternating diversionalsquint often struggle to get their child toparticipate in the treatment exercises dueto the child finding the treatment to bemundane and unengaging.
Core Challenge (02)
How can we use a physical interactive tool to help gamify alternating diversional squint treatment, making the eye-strengthening exercises more engaging and motivating for both the child and the parent?
Research (03)
Research shows that 20% of children worldwide, roughly 450 million, struggle with a sight condition that needs treatment. Approximately 23 million of these children struggle with a condition called alternating divergent squint. Treatment for these children typically involves repetitive eye-strengthening exercises, often done using an eye patch. These methods can feel isolating, frustrating, and mundane for young children, making it difficult for parents to maintain treatment routines. Looksee directly addresses this gap by replacing discomfort and repetition with creativity and motivation.
Purpose (04)
Looksee was created to reframe this experience through the lens of play. Designed for children aged 4–6, it uses red/blue glasses, character prompt cards, and patterned blocks to gamify two key vision exercises - monocular eye training and depth perception. By focusing on curiosity and storytelling, Looksee helps children feel excited and involved in their treatment, easing the pressure on parents to enforce routines. It also provides orthoptists with a practical tool they can recommend for use at home.
Child-led Experience (05)
Every element has been designed to support our mission: to transform a mundane exercise routine into an imaginative, motivating, and child-led experience. The visual identity is vibrant and supports visual development, using bold colours, simple shapes, and recognisable themed prompts featuring animals, outer space, and other playful worlds. These prompts encourage kids to lead their own stories and create a sense of adventure.
Anaglyph Imagery (05)
Anaglyph imagery supports key vision conditions like amblyopia and convergence insufficiency, improving depth perception, eye coordination, and visual processing in an enjoyable way.
Depth Perception (06)
Our blocks are made up of carefully crafted patterns to help support the children’s creativity and imagination. Each side features a unique pattern, allowing children to explore different arrangements and perspectives. Stacking and aligning the blocks helps train their eyes to judge distance and spatial relationships, making play both fun and beneficial for vision and problem-solving skills.
Playful, Portable, Affordable (07)
By removing the frustrating experience and offering a solution that’s playful, portable, and affordable, Looksee brings vision support into the everyday lives of families. It can be passed on or shared with other families, growing a sense of community around treatment. Its non-prescriptive nature means it can be easily shared across families and friends, increasing its reach and reinforcing the idea that effective treatment can be joyful, imaginative, and inclusive.
